From ICommons wiki

We tried to answer three questions

1) How to get the local population to the summit?

S: We have a dedicated local team

W: No clear idea of what the local target audience is

O: Get new people involved

T: Not living up to the expectations of the city of Sapporo as a partner, general lack of interest

What are we doing already:

  • 101 Academy to get new people in
  • Existing relationship with local university (Larry has spoken there)

Things we should do:

  • Create more partnerships:
  • Japanes companies
  • Indigenous communities in Sapporo
  • Existing communities of practice in Japan
  • NGOs

We need to focus on the transformation of how culture is created, shared - and that's what we need to focus on. This means also going beyond what we think about when we speak about "free culture"

2) How to make sure there is sufficient regional diversity (global representation)

S: Existing CCi,iCommons networks W: Free culture is a North American / European thing O: Focus on culture in general and not just on this inside concept T: One of the major threats is that we don't have enough funds/resources to actually be inclusive

What can be done about it:

  • First of all, acknowldge that the majority of the people should be from Asia (and does not need to be completely balanced), in line with previous summits
  • Scholarship focus on Asia
  • However, also thing about South America/Africa for which attendance is very expensive
  • Extra targeted fund-raising for specific regions
  • How do we make sure that with the limited scholarships, we can also bring North American and Europeans. One way to help them is to offer free accomodation and meals, but you have to pay for your airfaire - early promise allows people to self-raise funds in the next 7 months. Try to get people form developed countries to pay for at least part of attending

3) How to ensure sufficient regional diversity among the speakers?

S: Existing networks (see above) W: Dominance of white male professors O: T: That we fall into repetition

What can be done in terms of structure:

  • Use the regional networks of CCi/iCommons to identify key people from their regions (mirror diversity that exists in the community)
  • Communicate that we are looking for regional balance - we want people from the regions
  • Should there be a committee that selects speakers, that committee should also be regionally balanced

And things we can do related to the framework / goals:

  • Focus on culture rather than free culture
  • New people rather than old people
  • Include free as freedom of expression / democracy in the framework
  • Include criticism and outside perspectives (be more open to more divers opinions)
  • Include local experts
