Alternative SoC (Summer of Code) is an initiative which is aiming to form a global network of organizations and activists working towards integrating and strengthening The Alternative FOSS Movement in the World. We aim to do the following:
- Promote, foster and adapt the use of the FOSS technologies for the social action.
- Build awareness around FOSS applications to social justice, microlending, rural telecommunications, disaster prevention, freedom of expression, ending corruption, accessibility for people with discapacity, etc.
- Inspire young developers support and encourage Alternative FOSS projects.
- Increasing access to opportunities for developers and FOSS groups from developing countries.
- Provide residential programs that enables successful FOSS initiatives to scale their endeavors and achieve sustainability. Living and learning together, activists develop common conceptual skills and the sense of community that is essential for peer-to-peer collaboration.
What makes this initiative unique?
- There is not a similar initiative. The initiative can help local organizations to determine their local issues from a wider perspective, achieve their goals and improve the use of FOSS technologies.
- This is a transformational initiative to people and organizations with the power and vision to change the World.
Unfortunately, many initiatives have failed to integrate the roles of code and the applications. The consequence is the inability of exploit the potential of FOSS technologies to solve social/enviromental/health problems.
Some ideas:
- Because of widespread illiteracy develop an application based on wxWidgets to develop GUIs that illiterate people can use.
- Develop a screen reader for Cell Phones. Phones with the speech software loaded on them give blind and visually impaired people access to mobile telecommunications.
- An PostGIS application and how to implement features to improve tracking information about missing people. This application will be useful in disaster scenarios, looking for missing kids, rescue kidnapped people, human right watch, etc.
[edit] Burnstation and Freedom Toaster
Burnstation is a Linux app that turns a PC into a music burning station. It has a nice intuitive interface that deals with browsing / listening / selecting for burning / burning of music in mp3 or audio formats. It is a good way to promote free culture - music is a tangible thing with which to explain CC licensing, etc.
Maybe there could be a row of burnstations running during the summit, with a rotating staff of volunteers? At best these would be available in some public space, not just too isummit participants.
On the other hand, burnstations are a way to develop the idea pursued last year with the icommons CD - this way we could present not just single tracks, but whole albums of multiple artists from different countries. The interface also makes it possible to provide extensive information about albums / artists.
Burnstations could be complemented with freedom toasters, burning things like open-ngo-in-a-box sets and so on...

[edit] MMKamp
Multimedia camp (MMK) 2006 organized free media activists, expermintal musicians and sound artist to work for 5 days in CC Lamparna in Labin (Cro).
MMKamp 2007 can help organize people that are willing to broadcast over FM (setting the transsmiter and antenna and producing program) and through internet radio during iCommons Summit. Video matterial can also be streamed and material can be recorded during the summit.
(MMKamp is financially independant from Summit, thus can help bringing some of the artists and activists to the summit).
[edit] The Unconference Book
The book titled 'Unconference: Because The Audience is More Intelligent Than the Speaker' is a global community project where authors from nearly 12 different collectively collaborate to write a book about unconference. Its a book that follows the true spirit of unconferences where everyone is a particiant and everyone contributes towards the project.
The book is in the initial phase and it would be great to share the experiences so far and learn from the iCommons attendees.
