[edit] Remote participation

See this for details on the skypecast.

[edit] Questions include

  • How do we translate ideas of the commons for Asia? Or are "regional" commons the only other way to categorize local jurisdiction projects than "global" commons?
  • How do we move away from a one size fits all approach of what the commons means and instead look at diversity of practices that can enrich the commons debate?
  • Is it productive to raise a question of the Asian Commons: If so, are there ways in which the global commons language can benefit from nuanced local histories?
  • Most countries in Asia do not come to the CC with the same sense of crisis that animated CC in the US. Instead of a license-focussed approach, what are the ways that we can think of which makes more sense for Asia?
  • What are the strengths (projects, initiatives, collaboration, mentorship that have worked), weaknesses (lack of collaboration, coordination, divisiveness), opportunities (collaborations that could happen, areas that are being duplicated and things that are successful in one region and could be in another e.g. porting) and threats (lack of resources, legal threats, regional dominance) of Asian Commons activities?

[edit] When?

Session II at the iSummit (2pm - 3.30pm on the 30th of July) and beyond (depending on the needs of participants)

[edit] Goals

People have expressed the following goals in relation to the Asia Commons session at the iSummit:

  • to start to develop clarity of what we are talking about when we talk about a geographically-defined 'Asian Commons' (+ how we can work towards developing this clarity);
  • to start to gain a common understanding in the region of the different local contexts that give rise to particular strategies in relation to growing the Asian Commons (+ how we can grow this understanding);
  • improving regional collaboration and cross-regional collaboration by focusing on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of commons activities in the region (both country and regional specific) and areas for common/regional action (if any).

[edit] Outcomes

A document outlining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the Asian Commons that will serve as a basic blueprint for a common understanding going forward.

The outcome is not related as much to developing a common plan of action, but rather a common conceptualisation and recognition of the different strategies employed by commons activists in different local contexts and how this affects both local and regional strategies and activities (if at all).
